Verified facts
NatWest reported third-quarter operating profit before tax of £2.225bn, against £2.183bn a year earlier. Income increased from £4.332bn to £4.640bn, while impairment losses rose from £153m to £277m. These are quarterly figures, not nine-month totals.
The bank retained its outlook, with an updated expectation for risk-weighted assets. Its quarterly return on tangible equity was 21.6%, a bank performance measure rather than a shareholder's investment return.
Apolifina analysis
Income growth and credit costs need to be considered together. A larger lending business can generate more interest income while also exposing the bank to more potential defaults. The results therefore warrant more than a profit headline alone.
For investors comparing UK banks, the reporting period and profit definition matter. NatWest's quarterly pre-tax number should not be compared directly with the nine-month Lloyds result published yesterday. Capital requirements also influence how much balance-sheet growth and shareholder distribution a bank can support.
Uncertainty and risk
The statement is unaudited interim information. Guidance is conditional on economic and interest-rate assumptions, not a completed result or a Bank of England rate decision. Investments can fall in value; this is not a recommendation to buy bank shares.
