Verified facts

Lloyds reported statutory pre-tax profit of £6.625bn for the first nine months of 2026, up 42% from £4.678bn a year earlier. Underlying net interest income rose 10% to £11.084bn. The figures were released on 29 October and cover the period ended 30 September.

Nine-month remediation charges fell to £61m from £912m, while the underlying impairment charge rose to £930m from £618m. For the third quarter alone, statutory pre-tax profit was £2.332bn against £1.174bn a year earlier. The bank retained its 2026 guidance, including underlying net interest income above £14.9bn. Guidance is not a completed annual result.

Apolifina analysis

The profit increase is not simply a measure of stronger lending. Lower remediation charges make the year-on-year comparison easier, while the higher impairment charge points in the other direction. Investors need to consider recurring income, operating costs and credit losses alongside the reported growth rate. For a UK bank, household and business finances are especially relevant to the outlook. A quarterly result is nevertheless not a current reading of every borrower's position. The statement reports a period ending in September; it should not be presented as a full financial assessment of measures announced in yesterday's Budget. Nor does the size of reported profit establish what the bank will distribute to each shareholder.

Uncertainty and risk

Underlying and statutory measures differ. Credit losses, competition for deposits, regulation and future remediation can change the outlook. No new dividend or buyback is inferred from retained earnings guidance. Bank shares can lose value; this is general reporting, not a recommendation to buy or sell.
