Verified facts

Hiscox reports 9.5% growth in insurance contract written premiums for the first nine months of 2026. Its investment result was $104.2m, a 1.2% year-to-date return.

The insurer also reports a $192.2m unrealised fair-value loss on debt and fixed-income holdings. It expects those valuation effects to unwind as the bonds mature. That is the company's expectation, not a guaranteed recovery.

Apolifina analysis

Written premiums measure insurance business, not the profit left after claims and expenses. Investors need to distinguish underwriting performance from investment returns. A bond portfolio can offer attractive income on new investment while existing holdings lose market value when yields rise; the two effects are not contradictory.

Uncertainty and risk

Future claims, credit losses and market prices can change the outcome. No conclusion about an individual policyholder's renewal price follows from group premium growth. General information, not personal advice.
