Verified facts

Unilever reported 5.2% underlying sales growth in the third quarter, with underlying volumes up 2.9% and prices up 2.3%. Reported turnover was €13.3bn, up 6.7%.

The company now expects full-year underlying volume growth of at least 3%. It retained its annual underlying sales-growth range of 4%–6%, with a modest underlying operating-margin improvement expected.

Apolifina analysis

Volume growth and pricing answer different questions about demand. Neither establishes the price change on a particular UK supermarket item. Reported turnover also reflects currency and portfolio changes, so it should not be presented as the same measure as underlying growth.

Uncertainty and risk

Guidance is forward-looking and these are global results, not UK-only household spending data. Input costs, currencies and consumer demand can alter margins. General information, not a personal recommendation.
