Verified facts

Retail sales volumes in Great Britain fell by an estimated 0.4% in September, the ONS reported on 23 October. August's increase was revised to 0.7%.

Over July to September, volumes rose 0.7% compared with April to June. The monthly decline and quarterly increase therefore describe different periods, not contradictory results.

Apolifina analysis

Volumes remove the effect of price changes, making them more useful than cash spending alone when assessing demand. For investors in retailers, a national total is a starting point: product mix, costs and market share determine individual company earnings.

Uncertainty and risk

These are initial, seasonally adjusted estimates and can be revised. Great Britain excludes Northern Ireland. Retail sales are not a complete measure of household spending on services. General information, not a personal recommendation.
