Verified facts

Ibstock now expects full-year adjusted EBITDA in the mid-£40 million range after weak trading continued into October. The measure is adjusted earnings, not statutory profit or cash flow.

Q3 clay/brick sales were 22% below the company's expectations. Production was reduced by approximately 20% against its half-year plans. The resulting reduction in fixed-cost absorption is expected to reduce adjusted EBITDA by about £6m, separately from the effect of weaker sales.

Apolifina analysis

Factories have costs that do not disappear when output falls. Reducing production can contain stock but increase the cost carried by each unit produced.

The sales comparison matters: “below expectations” must not be relabelled a year-on-year decline. Nor should a building-materials company's update be presented as an official reading of UK house prices.

Uncertainty and risk

The earnings figure is guidance, not a completed annual result. Demand and cost recovery remain uncertain. Investments can fall in value; this is not a buy or sell recommendation.
